The crónica is the national essay
Portugal writes the city in columns: a tram, a queue, a minister, a pastry, then a turn. You do not need every word. You need the stance, the image that repeats, and the last sentence — that is where the writer puts the knife, gently.
A cidade muda, dizem. Muda sempre. O eléctrico, esse, teima.
The city is changing, they say. It always is. The tram, though, persists.
