When it happens — futuro do conjuntivo

For a future event that is not yet real, European Portuguese inflects the infinitive stem: quando chegar, se quiseres, assim que soubermos. English uses a present: when it arrives. Calque that and you sound like a tourist. Irregulars: for / fores / for; quiser; souber; puder; tiver; houver.

• Quando chegar o comboio, telefonamos.

  When the train arrives, we'll call.

• Se quiseres, fico.

  If you want, I'll stay.

• Assim que soubermos, dizemos.

  As soon as we know, we'll say.
