Relatives — que, o que, quem, cujo

Que is the workhorse: o livro que li, a pessoa que telefonei. Quem after a preposition for people: a pessoa com quem falei. O que points at a whole idea: o que me custa é acordar. Cujo agrees with what follows, not the owner: o escritor cuja obra li. Drop the English 'that' habit of stacking sentences.

• O eléctrico que apanhei ia para a Graça.

  The tram I caught was going to Graça.

• A pessoa com quem falei era a dona.

  The person I spoke with was the owner.

• O que me irrita é a fila, não a espera.

  What irritates me is the queue, not the wait.
