Clitics that make you sound local

European Portuguese hangs pronouns on the verb: custa-me acordar, deu-me uma alegria, lembro-me de ti. Polite 'you' is often third person: falar consigo, como está. Lá softens a request: diz-me lá. Feelings are often verbs with a clitic, not adjectives.

• Custa-me acordar cedo.

  It's hard for me to wake up early.

• O que te apetece?

  What do you feel like?

• Posso falar consigo um momento?

  May I speak with you a moment? (polite)
