The personal infinitive

Portuguese inflects the infinitive when the subject is named or changes: para eu ir, para tu ires, para ele ir, para nós irmos, para vocês irem, para eles irem. After para, até, ao, sem, por. English hides this in 'for me to go'. Get it right and you sound like the radio.

• Trouxe o guarda-chuva para não nos molharmos.

  I brought the umbrella so we wouldn't get wet.

• Antes de saíres, fecha a porta.

  Before you leave, close the door.

• Ao chegarmos, o café já estava cheio.

  When we arrived, the café was already full.
