Yesterday — the pretérito

A closed action takes the pretérito: falei, comi, fui. Ir and ser share fui — context decides. Gostar always needs de: gostei de, gosto de caminhar. Tomorrow's plans live on vou + infinitive until you need the real future.

• Ontem fui a Belém e comi um pastel.

  Yesterday I went to Belém and ate a tart.

• Gostei do filme.

  I liked the film.

• Amanhã vou telefonar.

  Tomorrow I'll call.
